What a hollow tile is telling you
An echoing, hollow sound when you walk across a tile floor means the tile is no longer bonded to the slab. It is not an emergency, but it is a warning. Hollow tiles move slightly under foot, the grout around them cracks and chips, and eventually the tile itself cracks or lifts.
When several tiles let go at once and push against each other, they rise into a tent-like bump. That is tile tenting, also called buckling or pop-up tile, and it is one of the most common calls we get in Palm Beach County.
Why tiles come loose in South Florida
- Slab expansion. Concrete expands and contracts with temperature. If the installer left no expansion joints, the pressure has to go somewhere, and it lifts the tile.
- Not enough thinset. Tiles set on dabs of thinset instead of a full bed have voids underneath. They sound hollow from day one and fail later.
- Lippage and poor installation. Uneven tiles with high edges take impact and work loose.
- Moisture under the tile. Steam cleaning, slab moisture and leaks all weaken the bond. This is one reason we never steam clean tile.
How to check your floor
Inspect the grout first. Grout that cracks or crumbles along the same tiles usually means those tiles are moving. Then tap the tiles with a wooden stick, a coin or your knuckle. A bonded tile sounds solid. A hollow one rings higher and echoes.
During the free estimate we tap the entire floor, not just the spots you noticed, so the quote covers everything and you are not calling us back next month.
How we fix hollow tiles without demolition
We drill small holes in the grout joints around each hollow tile and inject a bonding agent underneath. It flows into the void and glues the tile back down to the slab. The holes are then regrouted in a matching color.
There is no tearing out, no dust cloud, and you can walk on the floor the same day. This injection process has saved hundreds of Palm Beach County floors from the cost and mess of replacement.
| Factor | Injection re-bonding | Tear out and replace |
|---|---|---|
| Tile removed | No | Yes |
| Dust and debris | Minimal | Heavy |
| Typical time | Hours | Days |
| Matching tile needed | No | Yes |
| Right when | Tile is intact but loose | Tile is broken or most of the floor has failed |
Cracked and broken tiles
Cracked, chipped and broken tiles are replaced individually. We cut out the damaged tile, clean the old thinset from the slab, set a new tile and grout it to match. The one requirement is a spare tile. If you do not have any, we can help you find a close match or suggest a deliberate accent.
If the crack runs through several tiles in a straight line, the slab underneath is probably cracked. We will tell you if that is the case, because replacing tile over a moving crack just produces a new crack.
After the repair
Once the floor is solid, it is a good time to clean and color seal the grout so the repair blends in and the whole floor looks even.
