Why tile in South Florida

Tile handles what Palm Beach County throws at a floor. It does not swell with humidity like wood, it does not hold moisture and allergens like carpet, and it is cool underfoot. Most tile is non-porous, which keeps bacteria, mold and mildew from taking hold. It works in kitchens, bathrooms and outdoors, and if a tile ever chips, that one tile can be replaced.

Choosing the right tile

There are four main types, and the right one depends on where it is going and how it will be used.

TypeStrengthsWatch forBest use
CeramicLowest cost, wide selectionSofter, chips more easilyWalls, light-traffic rooms
PorcelainDense, hard, nearly waterproof, wood and stone looksCosts more than ceramicFloors, showers, patios, anywhere
GlassReflective, vivid colorScratches, shows thinset through itBacksplashes, niches, accents
Natural stoneUnique, natural look, can be polished or honedPorous, needs sealing, higher costEntries, living areas, feature walls

Porcelain plank tile that looks like wood is the most requested floor we install right now. It gives you the look of hardwood with none of the humidity problems.

What a good installation includes

The tile is only half the job. What is under it decides whether the floor is still solid in twenty years.

  • Prep. The slab is cleaned and leveled. Cracks get an isolation membrane so they do not travel into the tile.
  • Full coverage. Tile is set in a complete bed of thinset, not dabs. Voids under tile are the number one cause of the hollow and tented floors we repair.
  • Expansion joints. Floors need room to move. Skipping this is why tile buckles in South Florida.
  • Layout. Starting point and pattern are planned so cuts are balanced and the floor looks centered.
  • Mud-set for stone. Natural stone is set in a mud bed for support and a flat surface.

We have repaired thousands of floors that other installers rushed. We install so you never need that call.

Outdoor installations

Patios, lanais, porches and pool surrounds need exterior-rated porcelain or stone, a textured finish for grip when wet, and planning for drainage and expansion. We install outdoor tile and pavers across Palm Beach County and can also clean and seal the stone you already have.

Commercial work

We install tile in restaurants, offices, lobbies and retail spaces, and we can work after hours so you stay open. Commercial floors take more abuse, so we lean toward porcelain and seal the grout from day one.

After installation

New grout is porous. Color sealing it before you move the furniture back keeps it uniform, makes cleanup a mop job and carries our 10-year guarantee.

How the work happens

  1. Free estimate and measure

We measure, discuss tile choices and layout, and check the slab or subfloor for problems that need fixing before tile goes down.

  2. Demolition and prep

Old flooring is removed and hauled away. The slab is cleaned, leveled where needed, and cracks are isolated so they do not telegraph through.

  3. Layout

We dry-lay and plan the starting point so cuts are balanced at the walls and the pattern is centered where you see it most.

  4. Set the tile

Tile is set in a full bed of thinset, or mud-set for natural stone, so there are no hollow spots to fail later.

  5. Grout, seal and finish

Grout is applied and cured, transitions and baseboards are installed, and we recommend color sealing the grout before you move furniture back.

How much does tile installation cost in Palm Beach County?

Installation is quoted per project after a free in-home measurement. Labor depends on the tile size and material, the pattern, and how much prep the floor needs. Natural stone and large-format tile take more labor than standard porcelain. You get a written quote and the quote is the price.

Get your price

What moves the price

  • Square footage
  • Tile material and size, since large-format, plank and natural stone take longer to set
  • Pattern, such as herringbone or diagonal, which adds cuts
  • Demolition of existing tile, carpet or wood
  • Floor prep, leveling and crack repair
  • Outdoor work, which needs exterior-rated materials and drainage planning

Is tile installation the right fix for your floor?

A good fit when

  • New floors in living areas, kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms
  • Patios, lanais, porches and pool surrounds
  • Wood-look porcelain plank floors, the most requested install in Palm Beach County right now
  • Commercial spaces that need durable, cleanable flooring

Probably not the right service when

  • Full-home remodels that need a general contractor to coordinate trades. We are glad to do the tile portion.
  • Tile over existing tile. It is possible but we rarely recommend it.
  • Projects where the slab has active cracking or moisture problems that have not been addressed first

Tile Installation questions

What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?

Porcelain is fired denser and harder, absorbs almost no water, and resists chips and wear better. Ceramic is softer and less expensive. For floors, wet areas and outdoors we recommend porcelain. Ceramic is fine for walls and light-use rooms.

Can you install tile outdoors on a patio or lanai?

Yes. Outdoor installations need exterior-rated porcelain or stone, a slip-resistant finish, and attention to drainage and expansion. We do patios, lanais, porches and pool surrounds throughout Palm Beach County.

Should new grout be sealed?

Yes, and the best time is right after installation before anything has stained it. Color sealing keeps the grout uniform and carries our 10-year guarantee.

How is natural stone installed differently from porcelain?

Natural stone is usually set in a mud bed rather than thinset, which supports the heavier, less uniform tile. Stone also needs to be sealed after installation. Porcelain and ceramic are set in thinset and do not need sealing.

How long does a tile floor installation take?

A typical living area takes several days: one for demolition and prep, one or more for setting depending on size and pattern, and one for grout. We will give you a schedule with the quote.

Do you remove the old flooring?

Yes. Demolition and haul-away of old tile, carpet, laminate or wood are part of the job, and we clean up every day.

Should I seal the grout on a newly installed floor?

Yes. Any time grout is unsealed, dirt, mold and mildew can get into it. Sealing a new floor is the cheapest time to do it because there is nothing to clean out first.
